Tick tock tick tock boom boom boom12/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Her calling him out on constantly thinking about his show, to the point where he would make their argument into a song was awesome. I really loved the argument song/scene, the vocals were great and the actual real event scene was great acting. Also did I see The Shuyler Sisters as the ladies in the diner or am I crazy? Lin Manuel Miranda Cameo as a cook in the Diner cracked me up - always love to see him in things. I also enjoyed his roommate bringing up the fact he is enjoying the time he has in relation to what is going on in the world for his sexuality and the eventual reveal of his condition. Also when Larson is watching the news, about the AIDS problem. I really enjoy the cutting of Larson on stage performing what I assume is "Boho Days" and the songs he sings telling his tale to the actual events of the story in character.Īlso like the background plot of Homosexual struggles and the aids epidemic with Freddy at the party and his eventual hospitalization. Apparently Lin Manuel Miranda self casted him in his head after seeing him in a theatre production, even he was caught off guard in the casting room with how well he could sing despite professional experience.īradley Whitford was almost unrecognizable as Steven Sondheim for me and did a great job, Richard Kind made me crack up with his characters back tracking and spinning circles to try and match Sondheim's opinions Opening song was very catchy and I was surprised Andrew Garfield can portray his character so well, had to google whether he was singing or not and was very surprised to see he is doing his own vocals. Here are my sporadic thoughts for the movie, apologies they might be long: It packed a deep emotional punch with me, and I would rank this as one of my favorite movie musicals of the last few years. But I do think there is a lot to relate to of the idea of trying to create and leave behind something meaningful and feeling overwhelmed by all that life can throw at you as you get older. ![]() Some of the direct storylines and themes may not speak to those not involved in theatre, or who don’t consider themselves artists. Wasn’t the biggest fan of Vanessa Hudgens acting or singing wise, it all felt a bit overproduced compared to the rest of the cast who felt a bit more real and rough around the edges. Parts of the middle waned and wandered a bit, and some of the music I wouldn’t consider Larson’s best. The first and last act of the movie were the strongest, most focused with the most energy. Which is really the point of musicals, it’s just usually much harder to achieve that affect and not fall flat when translated to screen. Lin-Manuel and Alex Lacamoire (who directed Fosse/Verdon, and worked with LMM on Hamilton) have really done well at capturing and grounding the elevated reality of the musical moments, and using them as an emotional catalyst for the characters and story. So many easter-eggs, references, and cameos. The movie itself is a musical theatre nerds wet dream. I regrettably have not seen many of his movies and will definitely be checking out his whole catalogue soon. He obviously has a pretty face and the A-list status to hold up any Hollywood movie, but his choices and performances continue to prove he wants more than just that. His ability to bring both grounded, real emotional gravitas, and then comedic, charismatic levity always brings about dynamic performances. ![]() After seeing him in his Tony Award winning turn in Angels in America and then this, he has solidified himself as one of the great actors of this up and coming generation for me. Click here for tickets and more information.Andrew Garfield continues to impress me with everything he does. Tick, Tick… BOOM! plays at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre until April 26th, 2023. The whole show is well worth your time and money and this production deserves to be seen. Combined with Freya List’s choreography and movement work, the cast of five (the leads, plus ensemble members Sheridan Adams and Hamish Johnston) feels much larger. Even years after his passing, his shadow looms large.ĭirector Tyran Park has done an excellent job of narrowing in on the emotion of the script, keeping the comedy energetic and light, and the drama grounded. Plus, hearing the voice of you know who at the end brought an audible gasp from the musical theatre loving audience. Those more familiar with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Netflix film version starring Andrew Garfield may feel like some tunes are missing (the stage show doesn’t include a few numbers added for the film), but won’t feel short changed.
